Dear Church Family,
It has been my joy to serve as pastor of Old Greenbrier Baptist Church for thirteen years (1994-98; 2009-2018), which makes me and Dr. Randolph Johnson your second longest tenured pastors after Elder John, who founded and pastored this church for forty years (1781-1821). Together we have shared trials and heartaches as well as victories and joys both individually and as a church. Thank you for your support and love to me and Deborah as we have shared life and ministry with you.
As you know, the past two and one-half years of my ministry with you has been bi-vocational due to economic realities. The Lord has blessed me with a good secular job which has provided both income and health insurance. However, my first and foremost calling is to be a full-time pastor-teacher. Over the past year God’s Spirit has stirred within me the call back to full-time ministry, which is still not possible with Old Greenbrier.
So, over the past seven months, Deborah and I have explored a possible call to ministry with another church. We were uncertain until the second week of May whether this possibility was the one that God had for us or not. However, we believe that God’s Spirit has confirmed that it is the place to which He is calling us as scripture, prayer, the Spirit’s direction, the voice of the church, and circumstances have aligned to confirm it. On Sunday May 20th, we received and accepted the call to become Senior Pastor of Abingdon Baptist Church in Abingdon, Virginia beginning July 1, 2018.
Per our agreement together in December 2015 for a one month notice and with a heart filled with love and thankfulness for shared life and ministry, I have respectfully submitted to the Official Board my resignation as pastor of Old Greenbrier Baptist Church effective June 30, 2018.
Deborah and I know that the Lord will lead you to your next pastor as you look to Him for strength, wisdom, and guidance in this time of transition. We wish you individually and as a church only the best in life and kingdom ministry.
With Love and Thanks,
Pastor Bill & Deborah
